We started our journey of discovery at 9:15 on the 22nd
Mountain Time. Drove through a cathedral
of trees reaching for the sky.
Went to the LoLo Pass Visitor Center. Saw a video of Lewis and Clark passage and a
ranger showed us their route. As we went
on, we learned of their encounter with harsh weather, thunder, lightning and
heavy rain.

Along Hwy 12 we could see the river rushing and leaping
ahead of us as we drove “The Long and Winding Road” (Beatles).
We saw Whitehouse Pond where Lewis and Clark crossed on
the way back on September 15, 1805 and had camped just upstream. Saw Colgate Licks and trading party of 1890. We stopped at the place Clark named Hunger
Creek. Saw a dugout canoe like the ones
that the Corps of Discovery built to use on the river down to the Pacific.

Our group was pleased to have a historic performance by
Sargent Gass who was voted to replace Sargent Floyd. Sargent Gass told of the 10 Commandments to
keep the group healthy, and talked about the many health problems the men
suffered. He even demonstrated the use
of “bleeding.” Gass also talked about
his thoughts and ideas about Lewis’ death.
